Summary
On the far north-western tip of Sicily, rising steeply above the ancient city of Erice, are the vineyards of the Fazio family. One hundred hectares of low yielding vines, stretching from 200 – 500 metres of altitude, are planted primarily to Catarratto and Nero d’Avola.
Winemaking
The fruit from family owned estate vineyards is hand harvested, usually in the last week of August. The vinification is quick and precise with a focus on maximising varietal expression. The fruit is de-stalked before a cold maceration at 4 C° and a soft pressing of the grapes followed by a very slow temperature controlled fermentation and maturation on lees for two months in stainless steel.
2010 Vintage
2010 was an outstanding vintage in Sicily. Following a cold and very wet winter, summer conditions were almost perfect - dry, sunny and moderately warm in temperature. Harvest began two weeks late and the long, slow maturation allowed for excellent flavour development whilst maintaining aromatics and natural mineral acidity.
Tasting Note
Very pale yellow in colour with light green highlights. The nose is delicate and fresh with floral highlights and hints of exotic fruit. The palate is fresh and pure with lovely lemon citrus fruit flavours and soft mineral acidity. Serve well chilled with fresh caught fish, calamari or even Japanese sushi.
